Instant noodles are dried noodles and are often sold with packets of flavoring including the seasoning oil. Dried noodles are usually eaten after being cooked or soaked in boiling water, or fried noodles can be eaten straight from the packet for a snack.

Indonesia is the second largest producer of instant noodles after China which produces 16 billion packs a year. An early instant noodles in Indonesia was “Supermie” introduced in the 1970’s by Indofood Sukses Makmur, the largest instant noodles producer in the world. It later introduced two additional brands, “Indomie” and “Sarimie”. Indonesians prefer noodles with a strong flavor. Popular flavor of Indonesian instant noodles include chicken curry, onion and chicken, beef meatball, and chicken soto, a traditional Indonesian chicken soup. a dry instant noodle meant to replicate the traditional Indonesian dish “Mi Goreng”, or fried noodle, is also popular in Indonesia. Instant noodles are not only popular with college students, they can also be an economic indicator. the sales of instant noodles increased about 15% on a year-to-year as which was regarded as a sign of an inferior good, one whose consumption increases as income fall. the theory was that the increase in sales of instant noodles, which are usually cheap, occurred because people could not afford more expensive foods.

But there are the negativity for consuming instant noodles periodically. Instant noodles are often criticized as unhealthy or junk food. A single serving of instant noodles is high in carbohydrates and fats, but low in fiber, vitamins and minerals. this can be offset by the addition of fresh chopped produce and healthy meat or fish to the finished noodle soup to make a more complete dish.

Children in particular will suffer health problems if they consume instant noodles everyday. noodles does not contain enough nutrients, while their additives are harmful to pregnant woman and children under five.

As with other industrial fast food products, instant noodles use many chemical ingredients, such as food coloring, preservatives and flavoring, that people should be wary of. although they have minimal effects if consumed rarely, if consumed over a long time, the chemical substances will accumulate in one’s body and later disturb the body’s metabolism because essentially they are poisons.

The disadvantages in consuming instant noodles are: they can reduce the ability of children under five to absorb nutrients. Noodles can negatively effect the development of fetus. Styrofoam which often used in instant noodles packaging, can cause cancer.

Therefore, it is better for us to avoid consuming instant noodles frequently, and if you want to consume them, you can add vegetables to balance out the effects.
